History of the Thurber’s Jewelers Building
Thurber’s Jewelers building was built in the early 1900’s. One of the original businesses in the building was C. F. Motz Jewelers. It was followed by Stonier’s Jewelers that eventually moved to the south side of College Street. During the middle years of the 1900’s the building housed LaSalle Cleaners and Gloria’s Women’s Apparel.
The North Park located in the middle of High Street directly across from this building was created in the early 1900’s as a beautification project for downtown. It became the location of the electric interurban train stop for loading and unloading passengers. It was replaced as a stop for bus service. This park once housed the original Boy with a Leaky Boot fountain until the 1940’s. Today the park is significantly smaller than the original as extra car lanes were added to the street.
